Arviat has had successful greenhouse initiatives over the past 40 years. All have been small scale and initiated as part of a church outreach or school-based education project.
With funding from Health Canada and its Climate Change and Health Adaptation Program for Northern First Nations and Inuit Communities, Arviat youth are participating in local food production and food security research at the Arviat Greenhouse. These initiatives have been very successful during the short growing season. This success may lay the groundwork for a larger scale initiative to help us address food security issues, especially as our growing season lengthens and becomes increasingly favourable. As a community, we want to explore the potential and options open to us now and, especially in light of the data indicating low levels of consumption of country foods and a dietary transition that increasingly is turning to highly processed carbohydrates and sugars. Stop in and say hello to our youth and researchers this summer!
