When your eyelashes freeze, a thermometer is not necessary. A Vancouver Island girl, born and raised, I moved to Cape Dorset, Nunavut, for one year when I turned 18. I moved to study online and experience Canada's True North. I learned about true poverty and pride from those living in dwellings with no plumbing or electricity; I learned about what family is from those who had aunties and uncles in every house in the community; I learned about right and wrong and forgiveness from working with the RCMP as a student special constable and seeing those hurt and wronged forgive their aggressor; I learned about hunger from the lack of healthy food available in the grocery store; I learned about culture from watching the elders teach their grandchildren how to carve soapstone; I learned about community from participating is suicide marches; I learned to not be judgemental of those who are different, but to ask questions and be open-hearted - people want to share their stories and we must listen to grow.
