The original Henderson Regional Library opened its doors in 1961 as a result of a partnership between the City of East Kildonan and the municipalities of North Kildonan and East St. Paul. The branch was named after the Henderson family whose relationship with East Kildonan predates the Selkirk settlers by five years.
The Library operated as the central branch for the Henderson Regional Library until 1979 when it was amalgamated along with the Munroe Branch and other suburban libraries to form the current Winnipeg Public Library system. With the addition of the Transcona Library, the Henderson Library became the Area Library for the East Kildonan/Transcona community.
The library moved to its current location on May 25, 1983 in the Rossmere Shopping Centre located at 1-1050 Henderson Highway, and in 2008 the neighbouring space in the Rossmere Shopping Centre becomes available allowing for the possibility of a library expansion. In 2009, City Council approves the expansion project and in 2010 the branch closed on April 26 for extensive renovations. The renovated and expanded 18,625 sq. ft. Henderson Library reopened on October 25, 2010.
