Hillcrest Park (Thunder Bay)

Hillcrest Park (Thunder Bay)

Built at the top of Thunder Bay's northern escarpment, Hillcrest Park offers some of the best views anywhere on Lake Superior. From here you'll see both downtown cores of Thunder Bay, the entire Nor'Wester Mountain range, and incredible views of the infamous Sleeping Giant. The neighbourhood was built in 1906 as North America’s first construction-ready subdivision with streets and sewers already finished, with the park being the crown jewel of the new neighbourhood. Maraday Park became the prime example of early urban planning and community building in cities across Canada.

Thunder Bay in the winter is coooold! However, the view on Hillcreast Park was worth seeing. The city seems dormant and time frozen from the hill. There are many historical facts that was interesting to learn and monuments to see.

Thunder Bay was a key stop on our backpacking trip across Western Canada. Fortunately, my memories are much clearer then this dusty, scratchy slide of the Sleeping Giant from this lookout.
