Honest Ed's was a landmark discount store located on the corner of Bloor and Bathurst Street. It was founded in 1948 by Ed Mirvish.
He was born to Jewish immigrant parents from Luithuania and Austria. Ed moved with his family to Toronto in 1923 from Washington, D.C., and passed away on July 11th, 2007. Honest Ed's warmly welcomed all members of the community for nearly 70 years.
At street parties, Honest Ed`s would give away free cake, meals, hot dog, candy, and giveaways. The event was accompanied with live bands and balloons. During Christmas and Thanksgiving, Honest Ed`s would host a turkey giveaway, a tradition that continued until they closed their doors Christmas season of 2016.
Fun Fact: The Honest Ed`s sign used 23,000 bulbs!
