Honest Ed's Alley Mirvish Village, Toronto, Ontario

Honest Ed's was a landmark discount store located on the corner of Bloor and Bathurst Street. It was founded in 1948 by Ed Mirvish.

He was born to Jewish immigrant parents from Luithuania and Austria. Ed moved with his family to Toronto in 1923 from Washington, D.C., and passed away on July 11th, 2007. Honest Ed's warmly welcomed all members of the community for nearly 70 years.

At street parties, Honest Ed`s would give away free cake, meals, hot dog, candy, and giveaways. The event was accompanied with live bands and balloons. During Christmas and Thanksgiving, Honest Ed`s would host a turkey giveaway, a tradition that continued until they closed their doors Christmas season of 2016.

Fun Fact: The Honest Ed`s sign used 23,000 bulbs!

    I went here on a field trip as a kid and loved it so much. They don't make stores with this size and design anymore. So when I heard they were selling iconic product signs I had to get down there and buy one. I waited in line for 6 hours and was there until closing but walked away with a piece of Toronto's history. No regrets.

    A landmark in Toronto. I began shopping here when I was at F.E.U.T. in the 70's. We went down for a last visit on December 27, 2016 before it closed. I also attended a community ukulele workshop which as the last public event held in the building. I am so glad that the sign is being saved and moved to the Ed Mirvish Theatre.

    This was a great alley to walk through. There was of course the iconic Honest Ed's sign, and when you walked further down the alley, there was a comic book store and some great restaurants. I'm going to miss this little alley now that they're building over it.
