John Ceprano's Rock Sculptures

John Ceprano's Rock Sculptures

Gatineau resident John Felicè Ceprano is the artist behind the rock balance sculptures at the edge of the Ottawa River at Remic Rapids Park. This project, titled “The Art of Balance”, started in 1986 and continues to today.

From Ceprano’s website: “the Rock Balance Sculptures provide a free and exploratory art experience for all. They are built in harmony with the spectacular natural setting and has become a gathering place, drawn by its social, historical, and aesthetic-meditative environment.

The sculptures are built by hand, balanced and stabilized with small masonry shims, providing the public with an interesting and safe, artistic experience. The public is asked to not touch the sculptures, as they will easily fall.”

There's such a tranquility and peacefulness to this place - how could there not be, with these rocks balancing as they are? But look closely and you'll see that these sculptures also have a certain playfulness behind them. They are families, there are children, there are handstands and legs in the air.

Also, away from the river, you can also find a few more sculptures near the park sign!
