The Millbrook dam is a gorgeous, historical site found in the town of Millbrook within the Cavan-Monaghan township of Peterborough. The dam is 200 years old and has recently been the subject of much controversy. It has been determined that the dam is no longer stable and poses a possible threat to the community should a flood occur. Many residents wanting to preserve the iconic site an important symbol of Canadian heritage have protested plans to remove the dam, preferring a pricy plan to fix the dam. For more information, check out the story available on the website of the Peterborough Examiner.
For me, this is another beautiful site that not only represents European settlement, but also the Kawartha region’s intimate ties to nature which I mentioned in my video on the Ontonabee River. Sites like these remind us not only to slow down and enjoy our environment, but also to recognize our impact and relationship to nature. When I visit sites like these I get a chance to relax and breathe. At the same time I am inspired to continue to improve on the ways in which my habits affect the environment.
