In 1838, businessman Thomas McKay built an 11-room villa in the countryside outside Bytown, now Ottawa. In 1866, the house and surrounding estate became the official residence and workplace of Canada’s governor general. Here, at Rideau Hall, the governor general welcomes visiting heads of state and other dignitaries. If you take a walk around the grounds, you’ll find trees planted by many of these visitors. People such as Nelson Mandela, Emperor Akihito of Japan and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II have all planted trees on the grounds.

    On this trip, we only had time to ride our bikes through the grounds. However, a few years later, we were in Ottawa for a wedding and were able to take the complete tour. It was so nice to wander the grounds and go through minimal security - it really felt like the building and gardens belonged to the people of Canada!

    I love visiting Rideau Hall. The building and the grounds offer a tranquil place that’s quite close to Ottawa’s downtown core. I love to picnic on the grounds in the summer, but the space is well manicured all year long. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do!

    quiet peacful park walking distance from home. love the gardens in summer and the playground is my lil mans favorite part.
