In 1908, the first coin was struck in this building, which was then a branch of Great Britain’s Royal Mint. In 1931, the Royal Canadian Mint was founded and, for the first time, Canada was responsible for the production of its own coins. Today, the Royal Canadian Mint produces world-class circulation coins and collector coins at its facilities in Winnipeg and Ottawa. The medals for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were made right here in Ottawa.

    Hidden inside this castle-like fortress, the Royal Canadian Mint. My memories of this place are vague as I was there with my elementary school a long time ago! I remember being fascinating by the weight of a gold bar and getting my first Canadian collectible coin there.

    I remember visiting the Royal Canadian Mint when my family visited from over seas. Watching the show "How It's Made" used to be one of my favourite things to do. Watching in the Mint how all our proud Canadian money was made in the factory just blew me away. Then learning about how they came up with the designs and the significance of each one was phenomenal. At the very end, we got to see a giant million dollar coin, which was one of the coolest (and most expensive) things I had ever seen!
