Ruthven Park is a 1,500-acre country estate, and former home to five generations of the Thompson family, of the rural Haldimand County. Today the site is owned by The Lower Grand River Land Trust Inc., a non-government, not-for-profit volunteer based organization. The purpose of this organization is to conserve the cultural and natural landscapes for the enjoyment of its visitors. The mansion overlooks the Canadian Heritage Grand River which played a significant role in the early history of the area and development of the Ruthven site.
An example of development in this county would be the former industrial town of Indiana, which was established in the mid-nineteenth century, and is where David Thompson built his businesses and initially lived. A significant portion of Ruthven Park is also part of the North Cayuga Slough Forest, a provincially significant Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI) as well as an Environmentally Sensitive Area.
