The Skeena River is the second longest river located entirely in British Columbia, after the Fraser River. The river has long been home to many indigenous communities including the Tsimshian and the Gitxsan, whose names mean ‘inside the Skeena River’ and ‘people of the Skeena River’ respectively. Although canoes played an important role in navigating the river for centuries, the Hudson Bay Company began using steamships to navigate between Hazelton and the Pacific in the 1860s. Today, the river still plays a crucial role in the lives of the communities in the region, from economic activities like salmon fishing, to the beautiful nature reserves located along the course of the river.
