Stanley Jones School, Like Balmoral School, Is An Impressively Designed School Building Of Finely Cut And Detailed Sandstone Erected In 1913. Ionic Pilasters On The Central And End Projections, A Series Of Five Pediments Across The Front, And The Festoons And Other Well-Carved Details Make The Building One Of Calgary's Most Impressive Monuments Of The Neoclassical Revival. The Building Was Slightly Damaged By A Fire In 1928, But Still Retains Most Of Its Fine Interior Ornament And Detail. Originally Known As Bridgeland School, It Was Renamed In 1916 To Honour Major Stanley Jones, The First Canadian To Volunteer For Duty In World War I, And The First Officer From Western Canada To Be Killed In Action. During The Spanish Influenza Epidemic Of 1918, The School Was Used As A Hospital And A Morgue. The Low Additon At The Rear Does Not Obscure The Impressive Facade Of This Large School Building. (1982)
