We have been here many times. The two most recent visits were a geocaching hunt and an art show. It is a great spot in the Don Valley and I always use it as an example of how Toronto's geography influenced its beginnings.

Todmorden Mills Heritage Site has served many purposes over the years including a lumber mill, a brewery, a riding school and more. I got a chance to explore the grounds and see the houses that these people would have lived in. This area had the first industrial settlements in the Don Valley and the Todmorden Paper Mill was actually the first to produce machine-made paper in Upper Canada. The grounds are great to explore as there is a wildflower preserve, maintained by community volunteers, with varieties of wild flowers that are native to Toronto. My favourite part of my visit by far was the Papermill Theatre and Gallery. The gallery focuses on supporting community artists and rotates its collection frequently, so even more artists gain exposure! While I was there I was able to see one artist who painted scenes from all over the world, but the special ones for me were her watercolour scenes of Toronto. One even showed pictures of the classic red and white streetcar in Toronto. While visiting historic sites is always a cool way to step back into the past, you should definitely visit Todmorden Mills because it is not only a museum, but also a cultural centre that supports Toronto’s art community. Visit Todmorden for the history and stay for the art!
