The Varley Art Gallery opened in 1997 with a founding collection donated by Kathleen Gormley McKay. The gallery is named for Frederick Horsman Varley an original member of Canada’s famed Group of Seven. Varley (b. Sheffield, England, 1881) lived in Unionville from 1957 until his death in 1969. He is buried in the grounds of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario.
With 45,000 visitors annually, the Varley Art Gallery has become a cultural institution serving communities in Markham, York Region and the Greater Toronto Area, while reaching audiences nationally and internationally.
