Winterlude is Ottawa-Gatineau's winter celebration! With activities on both sides of the Ottawa River, it's the perfect week to get out and enjoy all that the capital region has to offer! Winterlude offers a number of outdoor concerts, displays and exhibits, and even an annual international ice carving competition! In Ottawa, festivities are located in Confederation Park, right along the Rideau Canal Skateway where you can finish your skating afternoon with a Beavertail next to the bonfire while enjoying excellent live canadian artists. In Gatineau, the Jaques-Cartier Park offers sledding, concerts, a snow maze, and even a zip-line. Transportation is offered between sites on OCTranspo, so there is no excuse but to get out and enjoy what Canada is famous for - our winter!

This is a tough event for a teacher to visit because classes are always in session in February. However, I was fortunate that one year the Scaborough Board of Education arranged for a geography teacher PD session with tours of many of the relevant departments in Ottawa such as the remote sensing centre. Needless to say, we also found time to take in some of the Winterlude events and skate on the canal...but it was REALLY cold!

Winterlude is never a disappointment. There are many activities going on like ice sculptures and bands and games for kids to enjoy. It really is a time for family to go and have fun for the duration of the festival.

I've always felt at home in Canada, although I've never really felt connected to any particular within it I have been. I do, however feel a strong connection to the changing of seasons. Every winter season surprises me, and every winter I stand in the cold, snow and slightly out of place in the white, yet feel completely at home. As much as I stick out, my place is here. And so this painting is about my feelings about Canada's winters. They're as much a part of me as any place.
