Bank Street

Bank St., Ottawa, Ontario

Bank St. is one of Ottawa’s main north-south roads, and passes through a number of notable neighbourhoods in the city. It begins at the corner of Wellington Avenue in downtown Ottawa, and heads south into the Centertown neighbourhood where the region is known as the Bank Street Promenade. Between Somerset St. and Gladstone Av., Bank St. is known as Ottawa’s gay village with a number of businesses targeting the LGBTQ+ community in Ottawa. South of Highway 417, Bank St. becomes the main street in The Glebe neighbourhood that is known for it’s wide array of small shops and restaurants, and now features Lansdowne Park where the Ottawa 67’s and the Ottawa Redblacks play. Bank St. continues past the Billings Bridge shopping centre into the Old Ottawa South and Hunt Club neighbourhoods, and then continues through a number of Ottawa’s rural communities before exiting city limits at the village of Vernon. Originally built as provincial highway 31 in 1934, but was downloaded to the city of Ottawa in 1998.

Since I was first able to start taking the bus on my own Bank Street has been a frequent destination for me and my friends when we would get together on the weekends to hang out or go shopping. There are many coffee shops along the street and many interesting shops. In my opinion, Bank St. between Wellington St. and Riverside Dr. is the shopping district in Ottawa with the most variety and the most character. One of my favourite stores to visit there is the Comic Book Shop. I am also a huge fan of the Sunflower Café. A portion of Bank St. within that area is also known as Ottawa’s “Gay Village”. You will know whether or not you have entered that area by the rainbow flags flying from the buildings or the supportive signs posted on most shop window doors and windows.
Bank Street is also a great place to go to find delicious treats from artisan bakers and dessert crafters. If you have a hobby, need a unique gift, or have an urge for a delicious treat this area is a great choice as shops produce goods from a variety of cultures and for a variety of needs.
