ByWard Market, also known as "the Market" by local residents, is the heart of the Ottawa. A place to shop, to eat, to drink, to dance. Some call it the place where Ottawa was born. In fact, ByWard Market and Bytown, the former name for Ottawa, were both founded by Colonel John By in 1826.

ByWard Market is one of Ottawa's most popular tourist destinations. It is home to numerous restaurants, pubs, bars, farmer's market vendors, artisans, shops, Ottawa's famous Beavertails stand, and more. Sometimes you'll see street performers, particularly in the summer.

    We have visited the market on several trips to Ottawa. On our last trip our hotel was right across the road, so we ate and shopped here several times. No Beavertails this time - that is one of our Winterlude traditions.

    The Byward Market is a cultural and historic shopping center for Ottawa, and in some ways for residents of Quebec who come to the market to sell produce, maple syrup, and plants. Lots of people sell crafts, jewelry, and clothing in the market as well. Down by Clearance Street you can find a wide variety of restaurants to dine at. On York St. and Clearance St. there are night clubs frequented by youth and university students.
    Growing up in Ottawa the Byward Market was one of the most interesting places to go and we travelled there almost every weekend to drink at the Tea Store and local coffee shops. Buskers also frequent the market. I’ve seen a one-armed guitarist, a tap dancer with a portable stage, an opera singer, a clarinet player who loves Led Zeppelin, a violinist, magicians, a bongo drum player, break dancers, and a Spanish guitarist.
    The market is a rich place for people to walk around and enjoy a festive atmosphere, especially during the summer. On Canada Day there’s barely a square foot to move but the buskers and events there make the trip worth it. For me this is a meeting place for my friends and a place to always see something new and surprising.
