Canadian Tribute to Human Rights (Nelson Mandela Square)

Elgin St Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” These are the opening words of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They are also inscribed on this monument celebrating and commemorating universal human rights and the ongoing struggle to achieve and maintain them. Step inside the structure, by Montréal architect Melvin Charney, and you can see the words for equality, rights and dignity, carved in 73 of the languages of Canadian First Nations people.
