Fort Amherst was the site of British fortification built to guard the mouth of the southern side of The Narrows, the entrance to St. John's harbor. The original fortifications at Fort Amherst, built in 1777, are no longer visible. Fort Amherst along with Signal Hill were strategically located to provide the defence of St. John's harbour from early settlers and pirates. The fort was named after William Amherst who successfully recaptured St. John's from the French in 1762. During the second World War, gun placements were installed to protect the harbor from German u-boats. Today Fort Amherst consists of a man-made harbor, a lighthouse and the remains of gun emplacements.

I enjoyed the majestic view of the cliffs and the North Atlantic Ocean. I also enjoyed the sight of the colorful buildings in the downtown area of St John's that can be captured by standing at the south side of the Narrows. Since it's right on the ocean, I do recommend to bring a warm jacket because it can get very cold and windy.
