3023 St George, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia

Fort Anne is a typical star fort built to protect the harbour of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The fort repelled all French attacks during the early stages of King George's War. Now designated a National Historic Site of Canada, it is managed by Parks Canada. The 1797 officer's quarters was renovated in the 1930s and now house the museum with exhibits about the fort's history and historic artifacts from the area. A 1/2 km trail runs along the fort's earthen walls, and provides a view of the Annapolis River and basin.

The history of this town is fascinating. Going from port royal to here is an absolute must and then walking the streets of the town.

Favorite memory: walking to the "root cellar" and feeling the temperature just drop. Also. Looking out the harbour and imagining the ships and the battles that would have taken place here.

I visited Fort Anne with my family, to mixed reviews from my young daughters. The admiration for the earth works and buildings was palpable, but their questions kept returning to the intent of such a structure. Colonialism is never pretty, or easy to sell to young minds.
