Kuujjuaq (Inuktitut: ᑰᔾᔪᐊᖅ) is the largest northern village (Inuit community) in Nunavik, Quebec, Canada with a population of 2,375 as of the Canada 2011 Census. Located on the west shore of the Koksoak River, about 50 km upstream from Ungava Bay. Daily life in the community is closely tied to the mighty Koksoak River. The ebb and flow of its tides are continually altering the landscape and they impose their rhythm on the practice of traditional summer activities.
Kuujjuaq was known before by another name, that of Fort Chimo. 'Chimo' is a mispronunciation of the phrase saimuuq, 'Let's shake hands!' Early fur traders were often welcomed with this phrase which they eventually adopted as the name of the trading post
