Lake Huron

Lake Huron

Tobermory, Ontario

Lake Huron (French: Lac Huron) is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Hydrologically, it comprises the easterly portion of Lake Michigan–Huron, having the same surface elevation as its westerly counterpart, to which it is connected by the wide Straits of Mackinac. It is shared on the east by the Canadian province of Ontario and on the west by the state of Michigan in the United States. The name of the lake is derived from early French explorers who named it for the Huron people inhabiting the region. The huronian glaciation was named due to evidence collected from Lake Huron region. The northern parts of the lake include the North Channel and Georgian Bay. The main inlet is the St. Marys River and the main outlet is the St. Clair.

“Many of us stray from the paths our ancestors have guided us towards, often forgetting the beauty in our own backyard” - I.V.M

As we departed from the shores of Snug Harbor that chilly August afternoon, with the cool fading summer breeze in our faces and the sun to our backs, we started our journey into the choppy waters of Lake Huron. With a small aluminum fishing boat struggling to stay afloat from all the equipment, and half of our friends waiting behind for the second trip, we slowly made our way through the breath taking rock faces and channels sculpted from the once jagged cliff walls. With the last few kisses of warmth from the glowing orange sun setting on the horizon, I couldn’t help but get the overwhelming feeling of belonging, almost as if I wasn’t meant to be anywhere else but there, in that moment, connecting with what it truly means to be Canadian.

This image shows one of the Canadian great lakes. This image relates to my Canadian identity as it shows the beauty in something as small as a lake. It is the picture of how a body of water can create such an impact in someones life, and make them who they are. This picture shows that the land around us makes us who we are. This picture has given me my identity as it has been my view every summer of my life. My name is Alyxis Watson, I am 19 and I live in St. Thomas Ontario

These are the types of things that moulded me into who I am today. Knowing about all Canada has to offer with amazing scenery and places to visit hasn't just been about me - but my children too. I haven't experienced as much as I want us too but from what we have had the opportunity to see has been empowering and just plain beautiful. These places are not only sights to see for us but a place to relax and spend time as a family, talking about the monuments, the lakes, wildlife and so forth.

This beach has been part of my whole life. We visit grandma and take many swims walks. We have campfires and sometime just enjoy the beauty of the beach. It is in a small town called Kincardine . Lake Huron. It has been a place where I learned the value of family. I learned how family is important and never take one moment for granted. As you never know what will come tomorrow. Tell each other you love them because in a blink they could be gone. I know this because it happened to me. My Dad got killed in a car accident. I will never see him again but know he is in my heart. He taught me what he coul . I know we shared Lake Huron so too me this is a special place in my heart. A place where I can feel my dad is with me. I am 18 and wish he was here to teach me to me a man. I have so many questions. I hope that everyday as I get ready for the future I make him proud. I know that Lake Huron is our special place and always will be. It shaped my identity in more way than I can ever express. It inspires me because I am at peace with my dad here..

Although many unknown walks and adventures in movies lead to magical enchanted forests and finding your cinderella or prince charming, my spontaneous walk in the woods lead me to this beautiful body of water. My adventure lead me to lake Huron. Amongst me my feet were embedded into the nice cool sand of one of the longest shorelines of the Great Lakes. It was so amazing! Looking ahead into the beautiful calming waves as they hit the shoreline ever so nicely, I reflected on how proud I was to have such a beautiful piece of land in our country. Seeing such a peaceful scenery reminded me of how fortunate I am to be living in such a wonderful country filled with peace and justice. I felt a sense of belonging watching the scenery in front of my eyes. Canada is a beautiful place to live and there is an adventure awaiting for anyone anywhere you go! My adventure found lake Huron.
