Major’s Hill Park

Major’s Hill Park

Mackenzie Ave, Ottawa, Ontario

Once home to Colonel By, the man who oversaw the construction of the Rideau Canal, Major’s Hill, was the Capital’s first park — and a much-needed spot of greenery in early Ottawa. But the Capital’s parks are more than just green spaces. They are gathering places, festival sites and home to many works of art. In 1978, artists Alex Wyse and Ken Guild were commissioned to build a sculpture in this park. Twist 1.5 was actually built on-site, so the public could observe the creative process.

I love the hill, no matter the season. It is so differrnt from one season to the other, but the view is always stunning. I enjoy the month of May where thousands of tulips decorated the park and bring such a cheerful coloration to it.

We were so fortunate to be in Ottawa during the Tulip Festival in May 2008. Beautiful gardens, an International Pavilion...and all of these unique tulip sculptures.

Beautiful views and you can find all types of people here - tourists and locals. It could use more benches as the side facing the Rideau Canal is a great place to view Parliament and relax.
