The biosphere reserve of Manicougan-Uapishka, or RMBMU, is part of a Unesco project based on ecological development and sustainability. The MAB project is a network of biosphere reserves across the world (there are 18 such reserves in Canada) designed to act as models of sustainable living. The goal of the project is to not only innovate and develop ecological strategies to apply in the future, but also to encourage such developments through dialogue. Furthermore, the reserves promote ecological diversity with respect to both the local flora and fauna.
The reserve itself, created in 2007, spans 55,000 square kilometres -- or the whole of Manicouagan river. It lies West of the St. Lawrence river and the central town of the river is Baie-Comeau. The reserve is home to much scientific research but ecotourism is also prevalent; hiking and kayaking are some of the activities that can be done in this sub-arctic climate.
