Rideau Canal

Rideau Canal

In a city brimming with Canadian history, the Rideau Canal is one of the Capital’s strongest links to the past. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the canal has evolved with the Capital. It was planned after the War of 1812, to provide a safe way to transport troops and equipment between Montréal and Kingston. As times changed, so did the canal, as it became first a commercial, then a recreational, waterway. Today, thousands of joggers, paddlers, boaters and skaters enjoy the Rideau Canal each year.

We have been here in in February for Winterlude and in the heat of summer. But my favourite time is in the spring because it is such a wonderful time to cycle along the canal.

My friend needs escapes from the hustle and bustle of city life. In Canada day weekend it seemed nearly impossible. But he found so much tranquility on the walk next to the canal. Beautiful and peaceful.

A staple of the Ottawa landscape. Great skating in the winter and boating, cycling and walking in the summer. We would be a different city without it.

This photo is of my sister and I at the starting point of the Rideau Canal Skateway. It was taken the second week of February this year when I visited her in Ottawa during her reading week. She's currently enrolled in Ottawa University. I absolutely love skating and while in Ottawa was able to skate twice on two separate rinks, The Rideau Canal and a little public pond. Skating is so peaceful and reminds me of the beauty of nature. I've visited Ottawa many times. First when my oldest sister attended post-secondary and now my other sister is there. I have many memories in Ottawa hanging out with my sisters and on the Rideau Canal as we always go skating when I visit. It's so peaceful, even with the snow and strong winds.
