Spirit Sands

Spirit Sands

The Carberry sandhills, or Spirit Sands are one of very few areas of sand dunes in Canada. This region is not a true desert, but the remnant of a sandy delta of the Assiniboine River, from a time when it ran into glacial Lake Agassiz. The sandhills are home to many unique plants and animals; including some cacti and hognose snakes.

One of my favorite days while driving across Canada, spent the whole day hiking.

We went camping here a few years ago. There's trails nearby, going through forests, and we spent most of our time there. When we hiked back on the final day, I was completely thrown off by the sand, even though I knew it was there. Its an amazing place not many people know about.

Having walked through the Spirit Sands, I feel what I found most interesting the the almost surreal nature of the place. You have kilometers of sand dunes around you and Jutting out in random places are massive pine trees.
