The market buildings once served what other purpose?
A military base A Schoolhouse Fire Station Toronto City HallA great view of the market from St Lawrence Hall. Lots of yummy memories of pealmeal bacon sandwiches from the Carousel Bakery plus bringing hundreds of Gr 9 geography students here on their annual field trip.
I've always loved this market, ever since I've come here as a kid! There is a great multicultural footprint; food is a nexus for people of all kinds.
St. Lawrence Market is a reminder of Toronto’s love for food. The site where the market buildings stand has been used for a weekly farmer’s market for over 200 years and continues to be a bustling, busy hub in the centre of the city. The market complex is actually made up of two buildings, called the south and north market buildings. The north market building is well known for its farmer’s market and its antique market on Sundays, where you can see some of the old furniture and items from early Canadian residents.
Today, the south market building is set up with permanent shops in the form of stalls laid out in a series of rows, with their own street signs. Customers browse while vendors call out to each other from stalls selling fresh fruits, cheeses, jewelry, clothing and more. I enjoy shopping here because you can get personalized advice and pick up artisanal products that are hard to find elsewhere in the city.
Many of the vendors are Toronto based, so you are supporting locals when you’re there too, just as residents did 200 years back! My advice? Grab a fresh made sandwich or sample something sweet as you make your way through the floors of the market.
