guestBook Guestbook/ TR4Mf67zsb/ Feb 26, 2015 Recognition of Canadian Solidarity

This year, I have been so incredibly lucky to have seen a wealth of nature and beauty throughout my road trips throughout Canada. It is with my fullest acknowledgment that these places - from Pemberton to Squamish to Whistler - have been experienced with privilege on the unceded Coast Salish Territories of the First Nations people.

As an ethnic-Canadian, I am thankful for how much I have learned and have yet to learn through the indigenous friends and leaders who have educated me in all that they do - from defending these lands and waters from invasion of corporations, to their process of healing through decolonization, to the importance of dialogue and acknowledgment of history. I am thankful for friends and people who have pushed to become better allies towards these efforts and have thus, helped me to become a better ally in understanding and becoming involved with these fights.

This is what it means to be Canadian.

    guestBook Guestbook/ alanammeyer/ Feb 25, 2015 Forever Exploring

Being able to freely walk into a forest is a privilege that fewer and fewer people in this world are being able to experience. I am so lucky to be able to go hiking, camping and kayaking to explore these lands. The diversity that is here, others will not be able to see. These experiences have shaped my identity as a Canadian. They have made me love being out with my friends, enjoying the beauty of the world around me. I was able to go on an outdoors trip with my classmates and it reminded me of those who can not and will not have the same exposure.. I know there are countless people around the world who do not have the same opportunities as my friends and I, so I am forever grateful to live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Surrounded by a lush green forest and the vast pacific ocean along with a sprinkle of west coast rain I could not feel more home. This is the place I call home, in the arms of mother nature. We seek to find, we find to create, we create to inspire. Inspire ourselves with new discoveries and inspire others with the beauty we can share in the discovery.

One of the strange thoughts I keep having

Is that my size in relation to nature is always fluctuating

I go from feeling like a giant in a bed of seashells

To the size of a tiny minnow

    Being hurtled against the shore

By the enormous swell. - Journal Entry, October 11 2014

  • Coastal Rocks, Tofino, British Columbia - The Wisdom of Coastal Rocks
guestBook Guestbook/ lillywoodbury/ Jan 27, 2015 Coastal Rocks, Tofino, British Columbia - The Wisdom of Coastal Rocks

The west coast of Canada is home to ancient coastal rock. One of my favourite past times is to explores and hike along the rocky edges that meet the pacific ocean. I often think of how old these rocks are, and how they have been a spectator for millions of years to the constant flux of earth's dynamic systems. When I go and sit with the rocks, I am able to put my life into perspective. Human life is so fleeting and short, which is partly which makes our agency to change the world so incredible. The coastal rocks in my home of Tofino, British Columbia remind me of how lucky I am to be Canadian and to have as much freedom as I do. It also reminds me that this comes with responsibility to use my agency to affect positive change in Canada and abroad.

  • Identity and Performance on the West Coast
guestBook Guestbook/ lillywoodbury/ Jan 27, 2015 Identity and Performance on the West Coast

The day I took this photo in my home of Tofino it was pouring rain with no promise of letting up. As soon as I reached the end of my hike, sun rays made their way through the clouds which elicited the most incredible rainbow over the beach. I thought, "what an incredible and unexpected performance", since reflecting on that I have come to understand that statement speaks to the best part of humanity in our perseverance to create a better planet.

The west coast of Canada is in continual dynamic change. From ghoulish dark storm clouds with ocean waves exploding like fireworks upon meeting the shore that changes to clear skies and the most serene pacific water. The transformation of weather interacting with the nature of the west coast reminds me of the performative essence of earth's natural systems. This speaks to each persons identity, no matter where we are in the world our internal selves reflect our outer environment. The west coast environment helps me to realize how all identity is performed according to the fabric of our social, political, cultural and ecological outer world. In Canada, the biodiversity of the west coast's pacific ocean and temperate rainforest makes me proud to celebrate the diversity across Canada's vast landscape and increasingly multicultural nation. People celebrate the rich diversity of ecological systems on the west coast of Vancouver Island where I live, which gives me hope that a celebration can be extended to the beautiful diversity amongst humanity. The raw beauty of the west coast that people from all over the world travel to see, be inspired and speechless is part of the motivation that one day Canada will put all of its economic and political efforts into sustainable energy and lifestyles that celebrates equity among Indigenous people, citizens, immigrants and visitors. The diversity of performance in nature should be an acclaimed parallel to the diversity of identities that are also performed.
