The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten-day event, which bills itself as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world's largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions.

The event's roots are traced to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. In 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick organized his first rodeo and festival, known as the Stampede. He returned to Calgary in 1919 to organize the Victory Stampede in honour of soldiers returning from World War I. Weadick's festival became an annual event in 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition to create the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.

Stampede 2016 starts July 8th, lasting everyday until July 17th.

There is nothing better than grabbing some tickets to the afternoon Rodeo and then hit the Chuckwagons and Grandstand show later that night. Always makes for a terrific time with friends and family.

I have attended the Stampede almost every year of my life. When I was young I loved the rides and the rodeo. Now I go for the rides and hanging out with my friends.

The stampede is crowded but with the crowds comes a unique energy! The whole city basically shuts down for a week and it is so cool to watch and be a part of!

I am turning 21 years old this August and this July will be my 20th Stampede. Since I was born I have never missed a Stampede, which luckily for me is in my hometown. Not only does Canadian culture resonate during the 10 days, but Calgarian culture as well. White stetsons, cowboy boots, plaid shirts. The look of the city changes and people become alive. There are FREE pancake breakfasts across the city and everyone is welcome to attend. This is such a special time for Canada. It is a time where everyone can come together and feel like they fit in. Strangers can instantly become friends while enjoying the rodeo or during the fun of playing games. People from all over the world come to enjoy "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth". There is a reason for it. The sense of community has resonated and actually made people from across the world want to come out and visit our great nation just to say that they have been a part of it. You see so many Canada flags, you hear the Canadian anthem every day at the rodeo. It just proves to us residents and also to those visiting what a beautiful, fun and welcoming we are. I remember two years ago a young couple from New Zealand asked me where the Bell stage was because they wanted to watch a magic show. I couldn't explain it well enough, so I walked them over to it. When we got there they laughed and made a joke about how Canadians really are as nice as they're said to be. To me, it was just something I would do for anyone if they needed it. It was then that it hit me - Canada is so well liked BECAUSE of the fact that so many of us live up to our stereotype. I am proud of it. The Stampede, to me, will always be the most wonderful time of year. Red and white forever.
