Garibaldi lake is a glacier fed lake situated near the top of Garibaldi Mountain. Located near Vancouver, the turquoise coloured lake truly represents the beauty of Canada’s landscapes. A beautiful 19 km hike is required to reach the lake from the bottom, and the scenery is beautiful all along the way. This sight is an excellent location to appreciate the natural environment of Canada.

  • Freedom of a Canadian Woman
    guestBook Guestbook/ mtnexplorer/ Mar 16, 2015 Freedom of a Canadian Woman

As a Canadian woman, I appreciate the many freedoms I have. Some of these liberties include wearing whatever clothing I desire, working in a wide variety of jobs, attending school, choosing a religion, testing my physical limitations, and exploring the vast landscape of Canada.

My favorite freedom is the ability to explore protected parks. I have hiked, bicycled, cross country skied, climbed and paddled my way across the Western provinces. During these great adventures, I have enjoyed the results of this freedom such as feeling physically strong, viewing the country from high mountain tops and singing at the top of my lungs. The simple pleasures of basking in the sun’s warmth on my face and head and the ability to wear shorts is invigorating. And most of all, I have delighted in the freedom to share my adventures with both my female and male friends. At other times, I visited the parks in solitude. My ability to access these regions comes from my freedom as a Canadian woman.

Unfortunately, in some countries, and sometimes even in Canada, women do not have this freedom due to laws or fear of violence. My confidence to merely step outside and walk down the street by myself is a gift. I feel extremely privileged to live in Canada where I can move and explore as a woman.

The top of Black Tusk in Garibaldi Provincial Park provided the setting for this awe-inspiring photo. It showcases the vastness of the Canadian wilderness and the endless space in which to move. The physical stamina and skill required to stand in this place made me feel strong and grateful even to attempt this feat. The rugged beauty and wide open space encourages me (and hopefully other women) to keep using this freedom to explore.

While this hike is a mere seven kilometers, the elevation gain is 1200 meters, rendering it physically exhausting. This hike was rather difficult for me as I had to drag my tiny, 12 year old body up it. However, the peak of this mountain makes the physical exertion worth it. There is a beautiful glacier overlooking a clear, crystal blue lake. This lake looks untouched, like it could be a large piece of sapphire glass. This among many other hikes, has truly made me feel in touch with my Canadian heritage. The hard work of continuously going up hill, has taught me perseverance. Whereas the beautiful views from above, and the array of nature and wildlife seen whilst hiking has truly made me appreciate the diversity of our ecosystems. Hiking has made me feel truly Canadian and feel in touch with my West Coast heritage. So why not go outside and discover what you can see while exploring our mountain tops?

This photo means a lot to me. It was taken on the 10th day of a hiking trip through Garibaldi Provincial Park. I took this photo, one of many, initially because of the stunning turquoise colour of the lake. The water in the lakes were incredible, we would stare at them for hours. This photo truly captures the beauty of the wilderness we have in Canada, and how peaceful nature can be. When I think of Canada, I immediately think of nature and how lucky we are to have pristine places such as this one. Proud to be Canadian.

Hiking up to Garibaldi Lake through the provincial park was worth every step of the way. Though the hike was a 3 hour continuous incline of bumpy trails, everything was forgotten by the time I reached the lake. You can feel the air get thinner as the temperature drops at higher altitudes. With the view of the glaciers across the turquoise lake, it was truly breathtaking. It was amazing stepping into the ice cold waters on a warm summer day, as the water is nearly freezing despite the air being so warm. This is definitely a place I'm going to visit again and share with friends and family.
