Where to begin? Victoria Park is central to London, ON, where I was born and raised. With an Azerbaijani background, my parents came to Canada and chose London, ON because it was known as the education city. Every summer, I go to Sunfest, biking, or walking in the park. In the Winter, I view the beautiful Christmas lights and watch the fireworks for New Years, go skating. As the Community Liaison Manager of the International Peer Guide Program at Huron University College, I bring all students to Victoria Park. The beauty is not only in the scenery and centrality to the city but also the history, named after Queen Victoria just like Victoria Hospital, as well as its connection to World War 2. Furthermore, it is not only a park of leisure, centrality, strong history, but also a place of inspiration. Last summer, I would go to the park after shadowing a Physiotherapist at CBI Physio and make deep reflections on life and where I was going. I was not only welcomed by the people of all ages passing or biking by, but the Canadian geese joining my park bench.
This is a picture of me playing soccer that I edited. It encompass 3 key ideas of my Canadian identity.
1.My love of sport; whether its soccer or hockey or even golf. Sports are something that unite us, as Canadians and allow a sense of connection between complete strangers.
2.The ability to adapt. I found that ball in the park and despite the fact that it was torn and seemed useless, my friends and I were able to make nets using water bottles and enjoy a game of soccer. Adapting to my environment is a large part of my identity, as weather changes from snow to complete sunshine in a matter of a day, (on occasion)!
3. The power of a park. The park can make a dull and dark person feel brightened! I play soccer and its the moments where I am simply playing for my love of the sport that most inspire me. I aimed to show this in the image by highlighting myself in black and white, almost to indicate that when I am feeling down, my environment can lighten my mood! I am blessed to be in a country that is so open with so many different places and spaces to play. Whether I am in Toronto or in Calgary or even Quebec City, I always find that I have a connection to the parks. I can go to any park, with a soccer ball and make friends instantly.Being in the outdoors, on a field. that's where I feel a sense of belonging.
Soccer is connected to so many countries, and playing with new people always me to grow an individual and learn about the cultures the world has to offer. I enjoy soccer clearly, and used this picture because I realize the significance it has in shaping my Canadian identity.
This photograph was taken at Victoria Park in Kitchener, Ontario. The photograph relates to my Canadian identity because photography has little to do with the things I see, and everything to do with the way I interpret them. When I take a photograph, I am able to express my Canadian identity through art. The photograph I chose was perfect to symbolize my Canadian identity because I spent much of my childhood playing outside, especially in parks. In turn, this influenced my passion for taking landscape/nature photographs. I am able to escape from the stress I face from everyday life from photography. I took up photography in high school because I wanted something to do with my free time. I never thought that I would enjoy photography this much- you should let passion devour laziness. In the photograph, the willow tree frames the main subject- the man taking a photograph of the ducks in the water. The photograph expresses the simplicity and calmness of the park. I feel inspired while taking nature photographs because I love the passion and joy I feel when capturing a perfect moment. Photography is another way I am able to express myself, and something I enjoy to spend my free time doing.
